Owls Music

The Fighting Owls Marching Band - Directed by Mr. Espy & Mr. McElroy

Under the direction of Mr. John Espy and Mr. Jason McElroy, The Fighting Owls Marching Band begins full rehearsals in July and performs at all Mt Healthy football games, marches in parades, and enters band competitions throughout September and October, and the first week or two of November. Rehearsals are typically on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday for between 1 and 3 hours after school.

Friday evenings are devoted to the football games and Saturday is dedicated to competitions or rehearsals.

Marching Band students at Mt Healthy have played a wide variety of music of the past few seasons from Stevie Wonder to JS Bach, from Carlos Santana and Tower of Power to film scores and the contemporary wind compositions of Elliot Del Borgo.

The Fighting Owls Marching Band is a highly successful competitive unit, as well. In addition to numerous 1st place awards in local contests, they have been finalists in Mid-States Band Association Marching Band Championships for seven of the last nine seasons. They have finished in the top 5 three of those years, taking 2nd place honors in 1997, 3rd in 2003 and winning Best Music in Class AA in 1999.

Concert Band - Directed by Mr. Espy & Mr. McElroy

Concert Band, under the direction of Mr. John Espy and Jason McElroy, is the concert version of our Mt Healthy High School Band. The Mt Healthy Concert Band has a long and proud tradition dating many decades. During the 1970s, the Mt Healthy Band toured Europe on several occasions, performed in Mexico, and recorded several albums. 1984 saw the Mt. Healthy Band become the first ever US high school band invited to tour the Peoples Republic of China.

The Mt. Healthy Concert Band performs yearly in concerts in the fall and spring and its members take part in the Ohio Music Educators Association Solo & Ensemble Events each year. In the past four seasons, Mt. Healthy Band members have brought home better than 300 medalist performances for superior or excellent soloist and ensembles.

Our Band also has a long heritage of excellent and superior ratings at Ohio Music Educators Association Large Group Events. Most recently, the band received superior ratings at this event in March, 2006. In April, 2005, the Mt Healthy Concert Band was awarded a superior rating and first place in Class A Concert Band at the Smoky Mountain Music Festival in Gatlinburg, TN.

Pep Band - - Directed by Mr. John Espy

Pep Band, led by Mr. Espy, plays during the months of November-February at home basketball games and pep rallies, and at various other functions.

Jazz Ensemble -- Directed by Mr. Jason McElroy

The Jazz Ensemble has lately become one of our audience's favorite ensembles. Under Mr. McElroy's direction, the Jazz Ensemble plays 6-8 concerts between February and May.

The biggest event of the jazz year is the Jazz Coffeehouse, held typically during the second week of May. This event has grown, in just three years time, from a gathering of a few friends and family in the HS drama room, to a much larger event at the Mt Healthy American Legion Hall.

Choir - Directed by Mr. Everett Moore

Why Join the Choir? Choir is not just a class it's an experience. From rehearsals to concerts to contests, choir students take away much more than just knowing the notes on the staff. They become well-oiled musicians with ambition and integrity. Melodious sounds are cultivated from a combination of innate ability and dedication.
